Addendum to a review

When I reviewed /Stuff White People Like/, I meant to include mention of this post by Greta Christina. The thumbnail: reflexively opposing authority–say, scientific authority–makes you just as much a slave to the dictates of that authority as blindly following it, although “you’re doing it in a Bizarro World/ Opposite Day kind of way.” There seems to be a flaw in her analysis, though. She’s willing to grant, or seems willing to grant, that people who set out to oppose what everyone else is doing are truly unique, if misguided. Yet in my experience, people who set out to oppose what everyone else is doing do go about doing that in the same way that everyone else is. How else to explain the regularity Greta can find in the anti-authority tropes?

What does this does this have to do with /Stuff White People Like/? Just that while this problem could be noticed reading Greta’s post, no one makes it as obvious as that blog/book does with its mission statement “This is a scientific approach to highlight and explain stuff white people like. They are pretty predictable.”

That is all.
