One of Hemant’s readers writes in to complain about atheist roommates:

… For example they are not very knowledgeable on any form of politics and their critical thinking skills, along with their spelling and English skills, are elementary at best… from my own personal experience I have found all the atheists I met to be of a higher intellectual standing. Is it an oxymoron to be a “dumb atheist”…?

Is it an oxymoron to be a dumb non-believer in fairies? A dumb non-believer in ghosts? Of course not. We should be happy that we’ve reached the point where atheism is well-publicized enough that you don’t have to be particularly smart to figure the issue out. I won’t say any more here, because Greta Christina already got everything about this issue right.
