Ed: “Our mere existence is offensive”

Ed Brayton highlights a case of people claiming to be offended by ads that say “Not Religious? You’re not alone.” He rightly points out that taking offense at such ads basically amounts to being offended by the existence of people who aren’t believers.

Though my initial reason for wanting to link was just to track the stupidity, there’s a personal point here: Becoming an atheist is the most liberating thing that ever happened to me. Not just in terms of liberation from religious dogma, but in terms of liberation from common opinion. Once you realize that you can live in a world where millions of people are offended by your mere existence without anything bad happening to you, you’re well on your way to realizing how trivial most of the things people spend their time worrying about are.
